Mega Block Ornaments

PicMonkey Collage

I figured that out of the millions of Mega Blocks we have scattered over the house, the boys wouldn’t  notice if a few went missing.  They did, however, take a quick liking to the cute Christmas characters that were created.

Elf Finished

Aside from poking/drilling holes in the blocks, this project is well suited for older kids who are able to cut out smaller shapes.

Supplies

Supplies:

  • Mega Blocks (Choose color based on what character you are wanting to create)
  • Metal Skewer – (or a drill to create the holes in the blocks)
  • Adhesive Glitter Foam or Felt Sheets
  • Duct Tape
  • Metallic Chenille Stems
  • Twine or ribbon for hanging
  • Hot glue gun & scissors
  • Sharpie Markers or Paint

Poking HoleI used a metal skewer to poke arm holes on either side of the block as well as on the very top of the block.  Please use extreme caution when doing this so as not to stab yourself. Using a drill to do this would be an intelligent alternative. :)

The heads were wrapped in white duct tape. Mr. Elf’s ear’s were also out of duct tape & his face was colored with a tan-colored sharpie (this was also used to color the small face on Santa).  Eyes were also drawn on with sharpie markers. Noses were made by cutting out & gluing on small circles of red felt.

For most of your characters, you will want arms & legs.  Start by folding a stem in half and pushing it through the hole on the top of the head.  Pull the two pieces out the bottom for legs and twist the top to prevent it from falling through.  Cap each leg off by sandwiching it between two cut-out boot pieces made from your foam/felt.

Santa Finished

For the arms, cut half of a chenille stem and feed through the arm holes.  Cap each end off by sandwiching it between two, cut-out hands/gloves.

For the hats, I used a 4″ piece of silver chenille and attached it to the top of the chenille already in place on the head.  This was twisted together and the end was wound into a ball shape.  A hat was made from felt cut into a small triangle & glued around the head and around the chenille stem.  The stem gives the hat shape to fold over to the side.  Attach a piece of ribbon or twine to the end of the chenille ball to hang the ornament from.  Add a hat rim made from a strip of foam or felt and wrap around the head.

We also made a Penguin, or two!  These were Haylie’s favorites.

Haylie Penguin

The Penguins are super easy.  No arm holes needed, just cut out flippers out of foam/felt and attach instead.  The feet are made out of orange foam/felt cut out and glued on to the base.  The face and the tummy are white duct tape.

Penguin Finished

All in all, a fun ornament idea with endless possibilities.  A toy soldier, nutcracker, angel…so many options!  Hope this is fun one for you!

All Three
